From Carey:
Its
really amazing how ignorant you anti SUV people are when it comes
to facts about vehicle mileage.
Why do you pick on the SUV and truck buyers? In fact these
vehicles get the same or better mileage than a heavy Mercedes or
BMW luxury car. Cool down and get a grip
..or move to Europe
so you can hang with other lefty communist.
Carey
the bmws and mercedes luxury cars are definitely gas guzzlers
too. a lot of the anti-suv sentiment is surfacing because there
are so many suvs. its become fashionable to drive a shiny truck.
also, because technically they're "farm vehicles", they
can pollute more than cars. older technology under the hood
equals big profits and not only for the people who make suvs. the
oil industry is booming with the reemergence of the v-8 and a big
chunk of your money is going directly to dictatorships because
guzzling gas keeps America heavily oil dependent. there's really
nothing lefty or communist about promoting conservation.
thanks for your letter.

Carey: Putting down those who drive SUVs is not promoting conservation. This is the USA (read: free market economy), if you want to do something that will save oil put your thinking cap on and design a vehicle that can feel the need. I drive a Toyota Camary that runs on natural gas for my commuting and need my Chevy Tahoe on the weekends for hauling toys, camping, taking the kids to ball games ect.
Gaspig: you are
way ahead of the game using the camary on the commute. doesn't it
irk you a bit though, that most of the suvs around you on the
highway are also commuting? i understand its our right and all,
but doesn't it get on your nerves?
i'm in no position to put anyone down cause i drove a pathfinder
since '92. gaspig.com has some bite cause really, any campaign
that's going to draw attention needs some spice. anti smoking ads
make smokers look horrible and recent anti drug ads actually
blame pot smokers for terrorism, good lord. this gaspig stuff is
tame by comparison.
strange as it seems, i'm pro-USA and pro-business. and grateful
to live in a nation that recognizes people's right to speak out.
in other parts of the world where oppression is the norm, i'd be
jailed by now; the same places where a lot of the USA's oil money
goes.
the companies that sell suvs are also developing the cutting edge
technology that can make cars super clean. already, with hybrids
and cars like your camary things could be a lot cleaner. but to
get the high-tech stuff from the drawing board to under the hood,
in a free market economy, consumers have to want it. that's why
so many people are pointing the finger at suvs, because when we
buy them, we're jumping through the "farm vehicle"
loophole that says throw the old motor under the hood cause 12 -
15mpg is fine.
i've talked friends into trading the suv for station wagons like
the volvos and bmws. they're just so much cooler cause they have
plenty of room for the family and all the stuff, and you have
access to the roof-rack without having to climb up the side, so
in some ways, you can carry more than an suv. not to mention,
less gas, better odds if a tire blows (which they do), better
performance and better looking. so far i'm batting a thousand,
they're jazzed about the change!
sorry for rambling on... you obviously have a plan going that
conserves fuel and works for your family. if more people operated
that way i'm sure things would be quite different and suvs
wouldn't be catching so much flak.
all the best,

Some BMW drivers aren't fans of SUVs either
