I live in Lowell, Massachusetts. My car is an 1986 Toyota
Tercel Station Wagon. I get about 24 miles to the gallon in the
winter, down from 27 in the summer. I would
love to deck my car out in GASPIG stickers. Mail 'em if
you could to:
hi Jay:
i'm making a new batch of stickers and will mail some out to you.
what color is your car? if it's a light color, i'd want to send
along some black stickers. if its a dark color, i'll send along
white stickers. thanks!
joe
Yeah, dude, I'll take some big ones if you got 'em. I'll GASPIG
out my 'mobile.

You know, we could think about the problems of life ... or even
just America (as most of it is unaware of the rest of the world,
maybe that's easier) .. anyway back to the point:
most Americans are overweight
most Americans are unfit
most Americans spend too much time in traffic jams
cars - SUVs especially consume too much fuel
building roads is unbelievably expensive
lots of people get killed on roads
Ok. So what we seek is a transport mechanism that:
consumes less fuel
uses less road space
parks in less road space
does not wear out the road
kills less people
oh, and if we could get a bit of exercise into the bargain we
really would have a winner.
How about a bicycle?
It works for me.
Simon
Sydney Australia (we have far too many 4-wheel drives here too
... and oh so shiny)
yup, too many people replacing
participation with imitation wouldn't you say? bike and
skateboard are my primary modes of transportation these days.
hey, if you've got too many of them 4x4s rolling around Sydney,
how about i send you some gaspig stickers?
all the best!

I'm sorry they're expensive - I can live without, it's ok ... and
sending things by air uses yet more fuel I guess.
I recall sitting once at a conference and noticing the chap
lecturing lived in Canada, had five children, and flew all over
the world to complain about wastefulness. Hmm ... Suzuki a
hypocrite? Surely not. Miserable pessimist though.
Me, I'm a techno-greenie. Technical solutions can solve a lot of
green problems - but they are politically undesirable. Sewage -
let's build a lot of tiny sewage plants. Power - let's encourage
house companies to build in solar panels (for water heating and
electricity). Water - encourage people to collect and process
their own. Transport - make cars pay the real cost, encourage
local businesses, improve communications. Industrial power - hmm,
nuclear sounds good - put the plants in empty places (Oz is good
at them - US too) and use them properly.
All very well - but the political will is not there. Big dams and
big roads are far more impressive. The odd war, too, much more
exciting than a peace conference or a treaty - but let's not go
there.
Enough.
Simon
hi Simon:
thoughtful ideas! going to post your letter asap - day job keeps
me behind on things. man, i wish i could make my living at this
gaspig stuff - that would be cool! i'd fly around the world in
747s and tell everyone how depressing things are :-) - thanks for
understanding about the stickers. perhaps i'll package up a batch
of them - might be worth it if you knew a bunch of people who
would post them on their cars.
