Gaspig,
Whew! Am I glad that this is an anti-SUV site and not some pro
gas guzzling rally party! I am also
impressed by the dialogue that removes some of the ranting and
"I am right and you are wrong" attitude which ends up
creating two monologues instead of a dialogue and everybody
leaves just as close minded and ignorant as they came in.
First, I grew up on a cattle farm in the northeast and fully
understand the utility of having a truck to tow, drag, transport,
just about anything. If you own an SUV and you do those things
more than once a month, don't care if you have dings and
scratches and dirt on your car I think that is terrific. If you
have 8 kids, first of all you are brave, but it also is a good
reason to have a van or SUV. I'm sure there are a variety of
other valid excuses out there for the SUV, but most owners can't
justify the waste/excess use of fuel/production of pollution.
Two kids, parents and a pet doesn't cut it. Buy a station wagon,
it works, I do it, my parents did it, lots of people pull it off.
The SUV is like an attic, the more space you have the more stuff
you bring which you don't need.

Jason:
thanks for the email and the encouragement. i spend half of the
time doubting myself in this project, not to mention my wife
thinks i've got a loose screw. i'm glad you feel positive about
the dialogue going on here. gaspig is a process more than a
finished product but that's life for you. scientists make
observations and report their findings. interpreters translate
the science to layman's english, then the info is filtered to us
in every way from Greenpeace to Rush Limbaugh. from our sofas we
then try to predict the weather. that's how i see it, a bit of a
crap shoot, a gamble. i have two kids and they'll have kids one
day so my bets are on the green side of things.
all the best...
