i commute between torrance blvd and hawthorne along PCH so i've seen the pigmobile and was very much amused.

the site is cool too!

i just wanted to pass along a cartoon that appeared in the washington post. i'll put it at the end of this message...

the gaspig phenomenon is a disturbing example of the extent to which the adult public is susceptible to fads. mass interest in sluggish, oversized, overweight, inelegant, laughably expensive cars can only be explained in terms similar to those of the interest, say, young people have in expensive, ugly shoes.

it is just a shame that monster trucks are more insidious than garish nikes.

it would be an interesting exercise to consider the reasons people use (fabricate) to explain their purchase of bovine death machines -- you could take a poll on your site! -- and debunk each one. mostly people want to be physically elevated and therefore to see better; and to be in a heavier car and therefore to be safer than everybody else.

that doesn't sound any more intelligent that the idea of standing up in a movie theater!

it's obvious why SUV marketeers openly refer to the market segment as "self oriented" (don't say selfish!).

and SUVs are no roomier than station wagons, dude! (not that cell phones need all of those dozens of cubic feet of space these days)

and don't let any ignoramus tell you that disparaging gas guzzlers is un-American. islamist terrorism is financed by oil money, pancho!

here's a bumper sticker idea: "Gaspigs Fund Terror"

here's a better idea, one for the site: create an ironic montage of extremely large industrial vehicles with images of soccer moms talking on cell phones superimposed into the driver's seats. you could title it "The 2003 SUVs are Almost Here!" and show, say, a picture a re-branded empty MTA bus with a petit young girl inside talking on a cell phone or drinking a latte.

also consider tractors (they could actually "move" traffic!), seagoing vehicles retrofitted with large mag wheels, jumbo jets, and the space shuttle.

later.

if you have technical questions about the web, i might be able to help, i'm a "web programmer"!

right on!!! thanks for the very cool letter, i will definitely post it as well as the cartoon! i'm beginning to realize that posting information and debating suv advocates might not be as effective as i'd imagined. perhaps gaspig.com needs a facelift which is kind of hard for me to stomach cause i worked a lot on it, but it seems most folks visiting the site drop in, scan around and split within a minute or two. some visitors surf around for over an hour which is great but i wonder if i'm preaching to the choir. people are weird - we buy the illusion of happiness packaged with bulimic models selling us everything from diet pills to suvs. logic doesn't play much into buying trends. take for example, high school boys with their underwear hanging out - far sillier than bell bottoms. and there's extreme cool-aid for kids. suvs are the adult version of extreme cool-aid. so i'm thinking about change... perhaps gaspig.com becoming a creative venture, something that talks more to that subconscious quest for happiness. the gaspig happy meal sort of. images that say small cars are "cool" or "smart" with cool smart looking people. images that make suvs and gas guzzlers look "silly", "not-cool", "not happy"... why not play the same game that sells them?

so if you've got some time, i'd love to talk with you about the site. do you have some examples of websites where i could see your work? also, want a sticker? i'd be jazzed to drop one in the mail to you - on the house...

thanks again Pablo!
all the best
